What Makes a Good Biker Nickname

I was monitoring the forum of a riding club I used to belong to. Every now and then, I hang out with them on a ride.

But I noticed it seems everytime they get a new member, the first topic of discussion is what that person's nickname will be. First, let me explain that this club doesn't have membership criteria, except the usual "must have motorcycle license", "must be an adult". Otherwise, they accept anyone and everyone, and make them full members right off the street.

In that sense, it's not like new members have demonstrated any habits, or characteristics, or history, that would help create a good nickname.

To me, a good biker nickname is one that everyone uses, as well as the story of how you got that nickname. You can never get a good nickname if it's rushed.

There are some guys in my circle of friends who are always called by their nickname. It's so much so, that it feels awkward to call them by the real name. And then there are guys (like me), who are rarely called by their nicknames. There's just no rhyme or reason why one nickname sticks and the other doesn't.

But here are some observations of mine...

1. Only give out your nickname - If you want your nickname to stick, then always introduce yourself with your nickname. Don't give out your real name. People who just now met you will have no choice but to call you that, and refer to you with that name when talking to others. That's probably the best way to make a nickname a stick.

2. Two or more people with the same name - If there are two or more people named Mike in your group of friends, it creates a scenario where one or both Mikes get called by their nickname.

3. No more than two syllables - Nicknames seem to stick better when they're short. Two syllables or less is good.

4. Popular names - If you have a popular real name (ie: Mike, Dave, Scott, Tom, John), you have a better chance of having your nickname stick. People with less common real names tend to be always called by that name.

So how does one come up with a good biker nickname?

I've tried to figure this out, and I can't come up with any formula. It seems just about anything can stick, if the situation calls for it.

I remember reading through the newspaper one day, and saw an obituary for a biker who's name was "Picnic Table". You wonder what the story was behind that. I thought that was a cool name.

But don't rush to come up with a nickname. Let time go by, and somewhere along the way, the moment will arrive. Sometimes it's the story of how you got your nickname that makes it such a good name.

Once that moment arrives, and you have a good nickname, then only give out that nickname to everyone you meet. It'll stick that way.

  1. I have been graciously bestowed upon me the call-sign of "VD". Kinda sucks, lol. I get called "Viking Dave" since my roots are from Denmark. VD is shorter. The other reason, from what I have been told, is I know how to get under people's skin.

I get the brunt of alot of jokes but it's all good.

  2. I sort of lucked out.

When I started my blog, out of paranoia about using my real name on the internet, I wrote under Joker. Why? I always liked both the Batman villain, and the playing card. It was only supposed to be a pen name, like some authors use.

Eventually, word of my blog started going around my HOG Chapter and many of the members now read it. Many of them also now call me Joker. My name is John, so I guess that falls back to what you said about common names being more likely to be taken over by a nickname.

The thing that cemented it was when our Merch. Officer started taking orders for a new batch of name tags. I was writing "John" on the list, and Wendy interrupted me saying, "No, no, no...you're definitely the Joker!" Finally got the tag last night as a matter of fact.

I could have done worse. The only thing I don't like is there really isn't a "story" behind it like most of the really good nicknames. It beats the hell out of "Picnic Table" though! I can only imagine the story behind that one!

  3. Funny, I thought they called you Joker because you actually look like The Joker on Batman.

  4. LMAO! Really? You think so? That's a riot, but I hate to break the news to you, nobody's ever told me they think I look like Caesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, or Heath Ledger.

I'm planning on doing the full-makeup for Blackstone's annual Halloween bash this year, so who knows, after that, you just may have something there!

  5. I have to disagree with you Joker. The way you got your name is a unique and interesting story.

  11. I agree, I got nicknamed "Slider" after hitting a patch of gravel with my back tire in a left hand turn. Caused me to go off road. Thank God on an old country road. I stuck with it and after going off in a ditch, missing a huge tree, over its roots and slided gently into the going up side of a gully to lay her down. No damage to me or bike. Folks behind me said, don't know where you got the riding skills to come out of that - made my mouth pucker, but sure was fun to watch.

She is incredibly hot, 105lbs you know the deal. She gets rowdy when we drink at our biker gatherings and is a blast to have around, I'm a lucky guy. She wears tall biker boots with her tight ass jeans. I named one of my Bros "Elephant". No one else out there has that. He told me and others in a meeting that he never forgets anything. Lmao, when waiting for a road name, be careful of what you say, and in my case what you do. Another interesting name is kickstand that a bro of mine got for not putting his kickstand up while getting gas at the pump in front of a ton of girls and the world, lol that was awesome. See you all out on the road, good riding, and hope those of you wanting a road name find the perfect name.

  66. The nickname given to me by my friends in the Puget Sound Bikers for Christ chapter that my wife & I joined several years ago was "Flintstone." Here's a picture of my vest with my name and nickname: http://goo.gl/l11DDs

The reason I earned this nickname is because I tend to wear out the soles of my boots by dragging them on the ground when I get low through the curves, especially the toes now since I ride exclusively sport- and sport-touring bikes, but previously also the heels when I rode a V-Rod. I actually had to replace the soles of my favorite pair of boots twice, then throw them out altogether when the rest of the boots were falling apart. I went through two sets of toe sliders on my current boots and now I've almost worn a hole through the boot itself because I can't attach any more sliders due to wearing through the eye holes for the mount screws!

I do appreciate the irony of being named "Flintstone" with its stone-age connotation when I am the most high-tech member of the group and run the website that I designed for the San Gabriel Valley Bikers for Christ which is the current chapter my wife & I are members of. http://SGVBFC.org/

What you say about longer nicknames not sticking as well is true... My wife gave herself the nicknames "Lady Gladiator" and "Titanium Rose," but nobody uses them; they're just too long and complicated.

I think the best nickname I've heard so far is one of a fellow SGV BFC member's wife... Her name is "Tricette" and several of us have taken to calling her "Tourettes" after she mentioned someone called her that when they couldn't pronounce her name properly. I think that's hilarious because it's completely opposite of her character.

I also have a non-road related nickname which is Juddy, I could use it but im wanting a more stunting related nick!
    Thanks heaps in advance!!

  76. My Husband is a member of a MC and I just ordered my support patches. The names I had submitted were all taken so I had to come up with something on the fly. With that being said and keeping the story short I ended up with "Ripper"! I was trying to think of things I like to do...sew...body surf stuff like that so Ripper popped up. Boring story if someone asks though. I have scars from surgeries and whatnot...I guess I could use that. Any suggestions on a good back story for that name? I hate it!

  86. Hello all. I need your help finding my name. I'm 5-6, 130 pounds, slim with medium length dark hair, big dark eyes. African American lady. I'm a Mother, a Nurse, Wife, a Gemini. I'm quiet, especially around strangers. I don't cuss but I love hearing people cuss. Makes my day.... Lol! Maybe because my Dad was a marine and brings back good memories of when he was around. I am talkative around people I'm close to. I'm very kind, patient, compassionate, love helping others. The bike world's helps me step away from all the rules of my everyday life as a nurse/Mother. My husband has been apart of the MC for 25 years. His name is Suicide. Most couples in the club have names that match. I'm at a lost for mine. Other members refer to me as a Barbie, Pocahontas, sunshine or Mermaid. (Just to give you an idea of what my club family thinks of me, I smile often and I love the water. But these names don't compliment his name, Suicide. Any ideas?? Disclaimer: this name was given to him when he was younger and much more risky than he is now. I tend to always play it safe, follow the rules AND I WANT TO LIVE.

  87. I'm not sure why everyone is trying to find a cool road name for I am a founder of a 1%er mc and I'm sure that history dictates that your brothers give you your name or your pretty much a poser names come from personality and situations that you in counter and how you deal with the outcome

  92. Personality, interest, and appearance nicknames as well as names you give yourself tend not to stick or last and are often seen as "weekend warrior" type names. Also "positive" names rarely stick either and are usually seen as self made even if they are not. In my younger (teen) days my friends called me "shaggy" because at 13 I could grow a full beard. Today as an aging professional people would just assume I smoke pot or watched a lot of scoobydoo and no one has call me that in decades. Today my nickname is "Prophet" not for any cool story about predicting things or whatnot but because I share a name with an old mormon "prophet". It is not a name I would have picked myself, and I am only call it among other bikers, but there are far worse.
